Plastic Guttering For Green House
If you’re an avid gardener, your greenhouse is probably a place of sanctuary for you. You can grow all of your favorite plants, and vegetables year round in a climate controlled area that is safe from harsh elements like extreme wind, rain, heat, or cold. With any structure, you need some form of water run-off system to direct storm water away.
And in the spirit of recycling, you know gutters can collect water that can be stored in vats for later use to water your plants. But, not all gutters are created equal. Consider plastic guttering for greenhouse instead of traditional metal.
To start, unlike their metal equivalents, plastic drainage systems are completely rustproof. Standing water cause by blocked drains will eventually cause metal to oxidize or rust, weakening the structure and requiring you to replace it. Plastic is impervious to the same type of erosion, remaining strong in spite of blocks in the system.
Cost is another benefit. In general, plastic will be priced around three to five dollars a square foot where depending on whether they are aluminum or steel, metal ones can cost from four to nine dollars. If your greenhouse is small then this cost might seem nominal, but it really adds up as the size of the structure increases. Besides, why spend that extra money on drainage when you can use it to purchase more plants?
Metal gutters can be really troublesome to install. You have to go to a hardware store to have them sized since a hacksaw probably won’t cut it. And if you’re not much for construction, you will need someone to come out and install them for you as they will probably need to be soldered on.
The same is not true of plastic. You’ll find a hacksaw will easily cut the pieces to size for you right in your home. And they can probably be affixed to your greenhouse with regular silicon gaskets, making installation a snap, literally!
One other benefit is that plastic gutters are a lot more resilient than metal. Metal can ding and dent from fallen branches or other knocks. Plastic can bounce back from these dings and they keep their color, making them more visibly appealing longer than the metal ones.
Here’s an alternative use for plastic guttering that you may not have considered before. You can use it as an inexpensive and easy reservoir system for your plants. Just take a long piece of gutter and insert it into one end of a capillary mat. These mats allow for watering from the base of the plants’ containers through capillary action. Just sit your plants on the mat and keep the gutter filled with water and you’re done. It’s a great way to ensure you aren’t over-watering plants that don’t require it.
As you can see, plastic guttering for greenhouse has many advantages over metal. It even has some unexpected uses by being an improvised reservoir. It will keep your greenhouse clear of excess water for a long time and end up saving you lots of money.
